There is always a first ...

I am always so delighted if a friend asks me to sew something. This is a great compliment and sewing makes much more fun if I know someone will be happy to get it. Today I was asked to make a tea cloth, a square for a vase. Elegant and restrained. Maybe a star? I love the "Summer Sampler Serie". The only thing: I don't have a printer so I had to take my pencil, my ruler and blue paper to draw the star myself.

It was not as easy as I thought but the fourth attempt was not so bad and with a little modification I was happy with my Evening Star. I wanted the peaks to be shorter so it looks more like a flower and ... tada ... I wanted the octagon to be one piece. That meant to do Y-seams for the first time. After a long time the templates were finished.

We already decided to use Simply color eggplant/white. Adding a Kona snow it should work out nice.

Does not look so bad? The theory was easy and I could close the circle quite nicely but the Y-seams on the octagon was a huge challenge. After I had all the seams finished it looked like the hills in Burgenland and no matter what I did it did not get flat. I pressed and pressed and pressed. Oh I just wanted to throw it away when I gave it a last chance. I pressed it on the batting and started to quilt around the octagon. A little more quilting around the peaks and I was done. It does not look that bad any more!

I did not know how much the quilting can improve the mini quilt. I start to like it a lot more now and I am pretty sure a vase will look really nice on it.Tomorrow it will be on it's way to "good old Austria" and I hope it will bring some color. They have to wait an other month until spring begins!

I also finished the "blocks" for the Modern Irish Bee just in time. They will be on the way to Fi at patchworkdelights. I hope she likes them. The quilt will look fantastic but it is still a long way to go even if the Bee helps making blocks.
