Summer Holidays

Today officially the summer holidays have started. Actually the last school day was yesterday but there was a birthday party in the afternoon. So we started the Holidays with a lunch and lots of kids today. Everyone brought something to eat but because Mary took my girls that I can go on the school tour with my son I made a little table"ring" today ...

It was the first time I made a round table mat but because her table is round I thought a square on would not look that nice.I used the same colors again I used for the table runner but the white was replaced by grey - I ran out of white!

Just a little stitching to make it more nice and the little present was done. I knew there will be lots of food so I asked just to bring "Linzer" as desert ...

I gave Mary some extra pieces in a tin and told her to leave them there for at least a week to get better. I hope she enjoys the table mat and the cake in the summer. It was a lovely way to start the Summer break and all the kids had fun. We will be gone for a long time but we also like to go to the mountains and the granny with the apple tree :)

Third Tablerunner done ...

Geschafft!
I am done! Today I made the last table runner before the summer. I am happy that I am finished. It was fun to make them but it gets boring if you make so many in a short time. I already have my favorite and maybe this one stays with me ... Who knows?

I used a pink solid for the binding and I love it. It matches perfect the fabrics.

My neighbor will be happy if I stop taking pictures in front of her house but this is the only short line I have to hang them up. It is just a little to exposed to the light so the pictures are not so nice. I think I will search for an other place in Autumn.

This time I used dark grey for the backing and I really like it. It looks great to the pink border. And did you recognize something at the three tablerunners?

Genau!
Yeah, they all have one of the Robert Kaufman "Metro Living" fabrics. I love this retro fabrics. I can tell you a secret: I also have the turquoise one here ;) Unfortunately I don't have time to make an other table runner before the summer break. Tomorrow I will be going on the school tour with my son and then they will have the last school day for this year! Summer holidays!!!

Second Tablerunner done

Back und Batting waren schnell bereitgelegt. Diese Farbkombination sollte heute vernaeht werden ...
The weekend was full with fun and activities. I had to make an other table runner today. The fabrics were already cut and so I could start as soon as everyone was gone ... but ... yes if there would not have been a huge BUT. The back fabric and the batting were set fast, the table was clean, the machine was set, iron hot ... Everything was ready to start ...

Also eigentlich straight forward. Tata ...
Until ... the thread broke ... I wanted to make an other quilt-as-you-go tablerunner and this was not good as the quilting seam is seen on the back straight away. Ok, ripping the seam of and start again. But it ripped again. Than I thought I might make a top because the layers may just be to thick. You know what is comming now? Yes, the thread ripped again. In that case the only thing I could do was going to town and get a new one. But as it is, if I am in town I also have to look for books, magazines, clothes,... so the morning was gone without sewing. Finally the machine loved me again and here is the second table runner :)

Pink/green with a gray binding. I was thinking a lot which fabric I want to use for the binding and I maybe would prefer to have darker grey but this looks nice. It is a colorful springtime tablerunner and I like it.

No, I am sitting on my fingers and will not point to the mistakes I made -even if you can see them - and I just hope the tablerunner is fine. I love the fresh colors.

Richtige Sommerfarben
I promised to show a better pic of the orange tablerunner. I somehow don't like the symmetry but the orange is absolutly gorgeous. The absolute summer color!

I am curios which combination she will take and which will stay in my house .. If no one else would like to have it :)

Star and Stripes ...

Today was a good day for sewing. It was raining, cloudy and no one wanted to go out. So I could use the time and sew a little until the birthday party was on in the afternoon. I still have to make two table runners. But I started with a wonky star in the morning. I love them! They are so much fun. Gingersnapquilts asked for help today and because I love to make these stars I only had to ask for her address. So this is the one I made for her ...

Because of the crap weather I had to make a picture on the window. The background fabric is the left over ruby ice I had from the July Block. Now I just hope this little one matches the other stars. I hope she gets lots of them to make a lovely colorful quilt.
After a little breakfast I tried to find color combinations for the table runners. It is not so easy. I found three combinations I liked.

I love orange. The fabrics are bright and brighten the day (if you are able to make a good picture)

Here it is again: green! No, I still don't like it ;) This are really the last two greens I have. I think they come together quite good with the pink. I absolutely don't know if she likes pink but if not, I will have a table runner (even if I almost never have one on)

This is the third combination I found. I just need to make two table runners but I like to give her different options. Maybe I swap one against ... We will see!
I already made the table runner with the orange fabric. It was not so easy with my little monsters running around. I always had to ask for my pins because I was not allowed to just take them. How could I even think about to destroy this beautiful art! I had to ask nicely and if I was lucky, I got one ..

Somehow all of my kids love the needle cushion. I just have to say at the end the needles are again unsorted. When I finished the first table runner the weather was still grey and so the picture is horrible. Maybe I can make an other one the  next days to show you how lovely the colors are...

For the binding I used again my loved dark blue (no, you can't really see it here) but I think this was the last time. The fabric is gone :( Now I am waiting if she likes it ...

Almost finished cat ...

Do you remember this little lady on my washing line? This little girl was an UFO for a very  long time.

It was thought as a present for my friend but I found lots of reasons why I could not finish it. So this little cat traveled from Ireland to Austria with me because here I could not find a matching wool for the hair. I had her in my bag all around Austria and at the end I found the wool and so we returned back to Ireland the same look as we left: without hair.

At the beginning of the week I sent her over to my friend with some fabrics. It is unbelievable how fast the post is working. After two days she arrived in her new home and today I got the lovely news: she has hair!!! And not even hair, also the face is done. Look at her. Isn't she adorable?
Ist sie nicht zuckersuess? Schaut doch mal bei Karin vorbei. Sie naeht eigentlich herzallerliebste Puppen! Vielen lieben Dank! Sie sieht toll aus *freu*
Just have a look at Karin. She normally makes the cutest dolls I have ever seen! Thank you so much! She looks so gorgeous!

New Block for July

I told you yesterday that I did something wrong on the Stash Bee Block for July. The chevron was in the wrong direction. I was thinking to rip and do it again but no matter how I turned the parts I could not find a way to bring the parts together again. So I thought it might be better to make a new one. I was lucky to find enough selvages. So here is the right one but I am still thinking what to do with the other one.

Somehow all pictures today are  not sharp or should I have an eye examination soon and check my contact lenses? Anyway this is my new block. I hope the Bee Queen likes it :) I also found lovely selvages this time ...

I am happy the Queen likes the block because I am out of selvages now. I am the unlucky person who gets the FQ from the other side :)

Also the corners match perfect this time. I think I got it now and I am  no longer a friend of my seam ripper.

The block looks nice and I am happy with it. It is very colorful. I can't wait to see all the blocks together. It must be a very bright quilt. I also have to explain Anneliese what I did wrong yesterday: This part of the block - where the peaks of the star are sewn on - is called the chevron.

As you see the stripes of the fabric shape an arrow directing TO the star. And exactly this is wrong. It should direkt FROM the star center. Ok, if you have a accurate look at the tutorial you could see how it should look like.

On the left side you can see the arrow TO the star center and on the right FROM. So the right one is the one the Bee Queen will get in the next days. And before I go on the travel I have still a quilt to be finished and two table runners to be made. And I am the lucky one who is able to go on a school tour - my son asked me to come - next week *happy*

Stash Bee July

There are only some weeks left and I will be gone home for the summer. I will be in Austria almost the whole July and August and because I do not want to miss a block at the Stash Bee I asked the Bee Queen from July what she want us to be made. She was so gentle gave me the information and yesterday she also made a little tutorial. A scrappy star. I tried to make it yesterday and this is how it looks like. A scrappy stars with selvages. Somehow I like it and I sent the Queen the pictures. Unfortunately I did it wrong :(

The chevron part is in the wrong direktion. The peeks should go out and the peak from the star in. Did I say it right so you can understand it? Now I am not sure what to do...

I used the seam ripper a couple of times and the fabrics did not like it. So should I use him again and rip it all off to change the chevron? Send it anyway and let the Queen rip it? Make an other block but what do I do with this one? Someone any ideas?

Killary Fjord

Somehow I could not find a day to show you the pics I made the last weekend. It was such a beautiful day that we head off to Killary Fjord where be booked a cruise. The kids love to go on boats and we did not do this for a long time. The day was perfect therefore.

At lunchtime we arrived at the fjord and in beautiful sunshine we could have a little picnic before we started on the boat. The kids were very excited. We did not do a boats trip for a long time. They could not wait thill it starts.

Toll gemacht grosse Maus!
There is also one thing I want to tell you: My big girl had her Irish Dancing Feis today and she again won the trophy! I am so proud! It is so lovely watching her dancing and she has so much fun. Well done!

Summer Sewing

Until now I never took part in a competition but someday it has to be the first time and so I just entered one. I found the competition Summer Sewing Contest on an other blog and after looking around I decided to enter too. Have a look at all these lovely quilts and projects there.

There are four categories you can enter: Quilts, Home Decor, Bags & Accessories, Clothing. I had a closer look around and after thinking it all over I chose to take with my mini quilt and entered it in the category "Home Decor"

The mini quilt may not be perfect but it was my first attempt with HST and I love it. I love the colors. My favorites - the dark blue and the dotty blue - fit together with the turquoise. Even the green looks nice  ...

It was not easy to sew matching seams but after a little time the seams matched almost perfectly ..

{Sew} Get Started nachzuarbeiten.

.. and the lines appeared straight. It was fun to follow Kirsten's tutorial at {Sew} Get Started and I learned a lot. I am no longer scared of HSTs! But the best thing happened today in the morning when I checked my emails and found the lovely comment from Kirsten. She likes what I made! Isn't this great?

International Quilt Festival Galway

What a weekend! On Friday we had the multicultural day in school and on Saturday the next event followed: photoclass with Reg!

I tried to find a class that fits in time and subject and the International Quilt Festival offered both. The only disadvantage: it started at 9:00 am! Actually I should have known that this means 9:30 in Irish *gg* Anyway I could do two things I wanted to do: learn how to make better pictures and go to the Festival. Isn't this brilliant? After a introduction in the classroom we went of f for a walk through Galway ...

I always pass this lady on my way to town. Isn't she beautiful? We were practising a lot and some of us took Reg's advice  really serious ;) ...

At the end of the walk we went back to the Quilters village. All the time ready to take an other picture - you never know who comes around the corner - maybe the majors wife? Doesn't she look amazing? Reg told us at the beginning the worst time to take pictures is lunchtime - exactly the time we were taking our pictures! So I am happy with the pictures I took but I have to practise a lot more.

After a short last talk with Reg I could go of and have a closer look at all the wonderful quilts hanging aroung. Over weeks I followed Cindy making one of the quilts for the festival. And than I found it! In the middle of all these lovely - almost looking the same - quilts I am pretty sure, I found hers!

Don't they look amazing? How all these quilts come together to make one picture? It was a brilliant day at the Quilt Festival and I met lovely ladies at the class (saying hi to Penny ). I learned a lot but now I have to go of and practise ...

Multicultural Day 2012

The kids had to wait a long time now until Multicultural Day in school was on again. Every year there is one day in school where the kids represent all the different countries they are from. Actually the kids enjoy more to stay in the school hall the whole day and can run around while all the others have to sit in the class room ;)

My kids are representing Austria and when I was at the wedding in Austria I tried to buy some of the delicious sweets we have there. There was not much time for shopping but I could a least find Mannerschnitten with the St. Stephens Church on and the Mozartkugeln with - of course - Mozart on it.

Mhhhmmmmmm!!
I would love to say we but it was me standing in the kitchen doing some backing that the kids also have some "traditonal" food like Linzertorte and Appelstrudel. Mhmmmmm!

We just did not bring "Sound of Music" this time because we found out that the Irish know this music much better than we do *gg* and I am sure they had enough sweets there. It looks like that lots of parents liked the Linzer and so I have to translate the recipe for a mum.

Stash Bee June ...

I can't get rid of the feeling that the Stash Bee ladies are very creative. This is the fourth month we are making blocks and till now we made a tree, a house, a star and trara: this month the challange is to make crystals. Wow! I had to read the posting at least three times, ask the Bee Mum if I got it right. So calm down and take a deep breath. Now that two other ladies already made the block I was sure, what the idea was so I searched for paper, pencils and my ruler ... oh yes, where was my ruler? I always "lose" (thanks to my little gnomes!) my stuff but when I was searching for it I found this little unfinished "cat" ... (she will go on a travel to Austria and my friend Karin will finish her)
.. but some when I had to start. It is not so easy to draw a crystal and at the end I also have to be able to sew what I draw. I made three! Easy but hopefully nice when they are finished but first I had to check if they fit the background. Doesn't look so bad?!?

Next time I use white paper again but I could not find any today. Anyway next step was to have closer look at my little, tiny stash for solids! Right, they also should be made out of solids and believe me, I don't really stash solids. But I found some and so I could start to sew.

I looks nice. A green, red and blue crystal on the black background. My machine hates me now because sometimes there were a lot of layers.

Actually it was not that bad but I am happy that I am finished. There are so many things to be done and there are only four weeks left until going "home". I hope the Bee Queen likes it and it will be sent as soon as possible with the signature block ...

.. and I am waiting for all the other crystals Hive #2 will make!
