Nordwest Ireland

Die letzten drei Tage haben wir im Nordewesten von Irland verbracht und uns ein wenig die zwei naechsten groesseren Staedte angesehen. So sind wir am Mittwoch Richtung Sligo aufgebrochen. Leider hat uns das Wetter in diesen Tagen viel Regen, Nebel und auch Kaelte beschert, aber in einer Cathedrale oder einem Castle merkt man davon ja eh nichts.
The last three days we went off to the northwest of Ireland and had a look at the two bigger cities there. So on Wednesday we went off to Sligo. The weather was not as nice as I wanted it to be and it was rainy, foggy and cold but as long as we were in a cathedral or a castle we did not matter.

Am Nachmittag haben wir schon einen kurzen Spaziergang durch die Stadt unternommen. Im Gengensatz zu vielen anderen Staedten haben wir hier keine Fussgaengerzone gefunden, allerdings gab es viele Shoppingcenter. Ein Phaenomen, das ich bisher hauptsaechlich aus Irland kenne, ist, dass die einzelnen Geschaefte oder Shoppingcenter eine Verbindung zwischen zwei Strassen darstellen. So kann man schnell mal trocken von einer zu der anderen Strasse gelangen und vielleicht auch noch auf dem Weg einen schnellen Kaffe mitnehmen.
In the afternoon we had a little walk through Sligo. We did not really find a pedestrian area but we found a lot of shopping centers. One phenomenon I only found in Ireland is the huge amount of shopping centers. The main advantage is, that you can walk from one street to the other and don't get wet and maybe you can take a coffe on your way.

Spaeter ging es dann weiter ins Hotel nach Enniscrone fast direkt am Meer. Der Spiegel, den das Wasser hier gebildte hat, war einfach nur schoen anzusehen. Angeblich kann man hier auch gut Wellenreiten. Vielleicht irgendwann, werd ich das mal ausprobieren :)
Later we drove to the hotel in Enniscrone almost directly at the sea (just the golf course was in the way). The reflection the water made on the sand was indescribable beautiful. Reportedly this is a good area for surfing. Maybe I try it one day :)

Am naechsten Tag ging es weiter nach Donegal. Endlich mal wieder ein Castle anschauen. Leider haben wir uns zuerst im Haus vertan und standen fast direkt in einer Verhandlung, aber dann haben wir doch die richtige Tuer gefunden. Neben dem Haus ohne Dach gab es auch noch einen Turm, den man besichtigen konnte und der auch mal anschaulich zeigte, wie man frueher hier gelebt habt. Nur so warm wird es damals nicht gewesen sein, aber dank der vielen Heizkoerper war der Aufenthalt recht angenehm. Auch den wishingwell konnten wir nicht finden und trotz Nachfrage, wurde uns leider nicht gezeigt, wo der sich mal befunden haben mag.
The next day we went of to Donegal. We were excited to see an other castle. Unfortunately we first took the wrong house and so we found the curt but than we found the right door. First we went into the house without the roof but next to it was an other building. There we could see how life used to be a long time ago. It was really warm in there but I am sure that it was not that cosy ages ago. The only thing we could not find was the wishingwell and even after the request they could not show as the place.

 

Auch wenn das Wetter noch immer nicht besser wurde, so haben wir doch noch einen Spaziergang durch Donegal unternommen. Ich habe mich noch immer nicht daran gewoehnt, dass hier die kuerzesten Strecken im Auto doch recht lange werden koennen und so haben wir fuer die Strecke nach Donegal doch knapp 2 Stunden  benoetigt und das schlaucht ganz schoen. Da ist es dann doch egal, wenn man mal ein wenig nass am Kopf wird und wie hab ich schon in den ersten Wochen in Irland gelernt? "If you let the weather stop you, you will never get out!"

Even if the weather did not get better we walked through Donegal. I am still not used to the streets and distances in Ireland and that the shortest ways can take hours. So it took us almost two hours to get to Donegal and that can be really exhausting. So it doesn't matter if we get a wet hair and what was the first I learnd in Ireland? "If you let the weather stop you, you will never get out!"

 

Auf dem Rueckweg haben wir dann doch noch einen Stop bei dem Glencar Wasserfall eingelegt. Angeblich hat W.B. Yeats sich hier inspirieren lassen und eines seiner Gedichte geschrieben. 

On the way back we made a little stop at the Glencar Waterfall. The guide told us that it was an inspiring place for W.B. Yeats and one of his poems was written there.

 

Nach einer weiteren Nacht in Enniscrone haben wir uns am naechsten Tag nach einem weiteren Stop in Sligo auf den Heimweg gemacht und wie konnte es auch anders sein? Hier hat uns die Sonne begruesst :) 

After an other night in Enniscrone and an other stop in Sligo we went back home. It absolutely had to be! The sun was shining :)
